Today’s mission: Recreate the classic orange and cream flavors found in one of my favorite childhood treats – the Creamsicle – in cocktail form.
To accomplish the signature sweet orange flavors in the creamsicle I used Gran Gala Triple Orange Liqueur. Gran Gala is ideal because it has a rare blend of VSOP Italian Brandy infused with the rich and lively flavor of fresh oranges. The result: Grana Gala’s rich amber color, velvety-smooth mouth feel and full-bodied, sweet fruit flavor.
Next I needed some vanilla elements to compliment the citrus. Enter vanilla simple syrup. This being an adult beverage, we need some quality spirits to round it all out. I went with the sweet and funky notes of a Jamaican gold rum and VSOP cognac for some nice hints of oak, vanilla and spice.
.75 oz Gran Gala Triple Orange Liqueur
1 oz Jamaican gold rum
.5 oz VSOP Cognac
.75 oz *Vanilla simple syrup
.5 oz fresh lemon juice
1.5 oz cream
Ice: Pebble ice
Preparation: Add ingredients to a shaker with ice, shake and fine strain into a snifter with ice. Garnish with dehydrated orange slice and fresh nutmeg.
*To make vanilla simple syrup:
Bring 1 cup of water to a boil. Add 1 whole vanilla bean and 1 1/2 cups sugar. Simmer and stir until sugar dissolves. Remove from heat and cool completely before using.
